Exactly What It Says On The Tin. A topic for music. All kinds, all subjects: artists, concerts, personal taste, etc. You name it.

I just rediscovered the Gorillaz and have had Rhinestone Eyes perpetually on loop for about a day now. They're pretty awesome, provide some of the most varied music of any band I know (every song is unique), and actually manage to make HipHop sound nice.

I Fight Dragons. Boston's best Chiptune rock band. My bro discovered them, and I've been getting my friends hooked ever since.
The YouTube Channel. They're blippy, happy, and upbeat. I really like them. And I think you can get most of their music for free.

Perhaps not as 'electro' as your link, but Caribou is one of my favourite musicians, electronic or otherwise.

That's possibly the chillest thing I have ever heard. So playing that the next time I get a party going.

Also, nightmare fuel.

I have an addiction to all things metal. Killing Floor offers some of the hardest stuff. Hate screamo and most metal singers though; some are good, but most just want to sound like a bear choking on gravel.

However, I listen to orchestra in an equal amount. Two Steps From Hell ftw, though Audiomachine is also really good.

Lately, I've been obsessed with a band called Fight Like Apes. It's an alternative/punk rock band from Ireland. When I first heard them, I didn't really like 'em (I didn't think they were very good musicians, especially due to the lead vocal's ability to make her voice *squeak* like a bad clarinetist).

It all started with this video:

(0ld Scratch is one of the best stop-motion LEGO animators IMO, BTdubs.)

And this one is silly. I like it.

Aaand then there's this one:

Some other ones you should look up (but not necessarily watch): Lend Me Your Face, Tie Me Up with Jackets, Something Global, Do You Karate? and also Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues.

Yeah. They're that kind of band.

Firstly, let's do a comparison.

White Rabbit- a favourite song of mine. My father grew up in the 50s and 60s and therefore introduced me to this stuff at a young age. It's stuck.
There are two versions that people think of when you mention White Rabbit; there's the aforementioned original...

Then there's this one, with a ridiculously long intro that, while awesome, never really fit the song for me.
The lyrics are sung differently, almost with a hesitation, or an anticipation. An interesting version, but I prefer the original.

Another two versions. This time it's They Provide The Paint (For the picture perfect masterpiece you will paint on the insides of your eyelids)
First version is by Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, a ska band I'm pretty fond of.

Second version is by Streelight Manifesto, another ska band. Their version is ever so slightly faster, though the vocals are similar.
I prefer Bandits more as a band, but Streelight do the song better.
Funfact: They're associated acts, and some members of BOTAR appear in SM.

Okay, I'm over my depression, as of now. Reason: I have something to be blindly mad about again.

Eurovision 2011 sucked. And I mean, it royally sucked. There were basically just 3 good, snappy songs by non-ridiculous singers (Ukraine, Germany and Georgia) and none of those made the top 3. Instead some little country that is NOT Europe, half around the world, known for it's ridiculously terrible first entry in 2008 (or was it 2009?) and their subsequent mediocrity in 2010 and 2011... won. Name: Azerbaijan... or something like that.

What's worse, this year's contest was devoid of any cool music compared to last year (as mentioned before) and instead fell back on the old, bad ways. And then there were like 5 boy-bands, aimed to gather votes from little 13-year-old girls who just got their first mobile phone and the gay community.

It was all horrible.

Good thing GLaDOS is around to cheer me up:
(Song may include Portal 2 spoilerz, so play that before you play this, seriously, do that, it's epic.)

Jonathan Coulton, I fucking love you, man!

Playing Gran Turismo 4 a bit more now. What I'm glad about is not only the selection of cars, but also the great licensed tracks (including some game-exclusive remixes). Driving to the funk never felt so good.
The excellent track listing includes:

This is the song for the kickass opening video:

And of course when the game plays this for your failure during a license test, you don't really give a crap...

Picked up a CCR CD at the market for 50p. Dad, my sister and I drove through the rain and howling wind of a typical Suffolk day while this played.
(I also picked up a collection of Rudyard Kipling poems and Myth III: The Wolf Age, but that's for another topic entirely.)

Plus Nina Simone's jazzier version.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why I've been listening to this song on loop for so long. The music video is kinda hilariously corny (I love his little twirls), but I really like the song.
And, of course, after five years of Spanish, I still have no idea what he's saying (other than: I think he's calling this girl a bird. Dunno why.).

The topic for all things Music Empty HARROW KEEPS THE TOPIC ALIVE: THE POST

You guys know of Kasabian, yeah? British band?
I've always complained about how they feel like they're lacking something. Their songs usually have killer riffs and basslines like roaring thunder, but to me they never looked like they were putting in the 100%. Anyway, new album coming up in September. VEVO decided I should take a look and shoves an ad in my face about it- I obliged, and took a look at "Switchblade Smiles".
What did I get?

...

HOLY EFFING SHIT

It's Kasabian! Dry, monotone Kasabian! WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN
I'm excited. If they can keep this up for the rest of the album, it'll be a solid purchase. Just please raise the volume for Serge's parts. I can barely hear him.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

My favourite Biggie song. The intro is a crack at Raekwon, I'm guessing. At the time Raekwon was mad jelly of Biggie's success, to put it lightly.
A lot of people hate the intro, mind, because it goes on longer than Karen Gillan's legs. (Or War and Peace, a Final Fantasy game, etc)
Still an excellent track, though I've never been fond of the crackling with the audio.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Nas album coming up soon, called Life is Good. A track or two were leaked and this is one of them. It's called "Nasty" and sounds really oldschool. It's got a steady beat, (that can't keep up with Nas) choice lyrics and some fun wordplay. Nas brings along his best pal, Mr Double Entendre to better emphasise just how great a lyrcist he is.

And is it just me, or is there a Song of Ice and Fire reference in there? Maybe I'm just taking a literal lyric metaphorically, but I dunno.
Either way, it's a fantastic song. Nas is going to massacre the competition- or maybe he won't, seeing as the public actually enjoys repetitive autotuned bullshit.

I normally loathe anything that's even just close to rap or hip-hop. But this song (which is totally not mainstream, yay) is A: Awesome, text-wise and B: SO FUCKING CATCHY!

And yes, it makes more sense if you speak German. AND YES the album cover is fucking SCARY!

I might as well take a look at the new Arctic Monkeys songs, seeing as I call myself a fan of theirs. Hell, I even count as a hipster fan.
Right, let's look for some songs. A quick google search should- oh, what's this? The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala?
Oh boy, this'll be awesome.

Reactions:
0:00 to 0:09- Wait a minute, this doesn't sound like them at all
0:09 to 0:24- No, this is them. That's their unmistakable bassline right there.
0:24 to 0:45- Concentrate, Harrow. This lyrics are nice and all but they mean nothing if you're focusing on the bassline.
0:45 to 0:52- "It makes me want to blow the candles out/just to see if you glow in the dark" What does this have to do with shalalalas and the hellcat spangling thereof?
0:52 to 1:05- Oh, I see. That's quite a nice melody. And the best use of "shalalala" ( I'm not even caring if I spelt that right) since that Peter Kay song.
1:05 to 1:15- What is this lass in a black catsuit doing here? It doesn't fit. Or maybe it does. I dunno, it just seems out of place amongst all the grainy band footage.
1:05 to 1.21- "I took the batteries out of my mysticism/and put them in my thinking cap" is the best line Alex Turner has ever put to paper.
1.21 to 1.28- About the catsuit lass- so, what, the band are interacting with her? Oh. So she's a part of the footage, not some disconnected eye candy?
1.28 to 1.53- Seems like we're heading towards a change. What'll we get next, a transition into a slow love song?
1.53 to 1.58- He just mentioned something about hellcats, so we're alright.
1.58 to 2.50- This is a really nice song. There's a steady bassline, fun lyrics, and a catchy melody.

This is exactly what I wanted from a new Monkeys album! Why don't we see what the rest of the album is like, eh?

Judging by the title, this'll be another entertaining ballad of the south east, complete with slang and accents.
Wait a minute, what's this? The bassline- it's dramatic! And these riffs! It's not the calm, cool and relaxing melody I'm used to getting! And did they just go, "oooooh!" over the track? I've never heard them do that before. In fact, the whole thing sounds really Alice in Chains-y. I like it, but it sounds really different. A lot more different than humbug. I wonder if the rest of the album has anything like this.

Ooh err. This is... different. It sounds really shouty and retro. And what's with the lyrics? I expect more from the Monkeys.
And-
RIGHT, THAT'S IT. IF I HEAR ONE MORE ARTIST TALK ABOUT "BREAKING YOU DOWN" IN A LOVE/LUST SONG, I SHALL PUNCH SOMETHING.
I'LL ALSO COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW MUCH THIS ALBUM SOUNDS LIKE NOTHING ELSE THEY'VE EVER PUT OUT

So yes, it's different. I'll pick up the full thing and see just how different later. I'm a little Neutral'd for the moment, but I'm sure the album will be fine.

DAT BASS

This song was so incredibly popular several months ago. You couldn't walk down the street without hearing it blasting from some dirty back alley.
It took me a while before I realised it was Katy B- anyone familiar with the southern songstress (not that anyone here would be) should find this different to her previous works. It's a nice break from her usual style, with a dark melody that's boosted by the vocals.
The fun thing is that it's a club song, and I hate clubs. The music is almost always shit thanks to the fact that people don't seem to listen when they're downing bottles, dancing, or getting their knickers taken off and being hammered like a rusty nail. I mean, that's what people at clubs do, right?
But it's more of a song about the music of a good club, and all that dark bass and thumping subs and shit that I can't appreciate because all the dances I've ever been to sucked. I was knocked back and forth with my face in someone else's armpit while some idiot poured drinks into the crowd. Still, Katy B manages to make the club attractive. How novel.
Oh yeah, and it's based on "Man on a Mission", a track by scene skipper Benga.

The beats hit harder and sound better, but I adore Katy B, and I think her banshee wails really improve on the song.
______________________________________________________________________________________________

Huh. I read about this Wretch 32 guy. He was in a double interview with Rakim.
Ooh, look. Example's on this track! Yaaaaaaaay.
At least he washed his hair this time.

Ooh, this is alright. Ironically, his sound is a lot like several other rappers I've heard, but it's nice and upbeat. I can get with this.
(And while I don't like Example that much, he's a nice sounding part of most song's he's on. Except maybe "Hooligans". Look it up.)
What else is there of this guy?

Ignoring that awesome guitar, is that a feline being tortured? All I hear is this loud cat screeches getting in the way.
The title, by the way, is a play on words. He's ridin' it like a Traktor, the company that makes instruments. Also like tractor, the farming vehicle with a top speed of 10 miles per hour.

Fun stuff, eh?
